Founded in 1917, Sterling was a manufacturer of tableware for hotels and restaurants. They started out with small items like mugs and bowls, but gradually expanded their business and even supplied large quantities of tableware to the military during World War II.

This particular mug was manufactured for military use, a handleless mug used by the US Navy. It was nicknamed the "Navy Watch Mug" or "Watchman's Mug" because watchmen on board would warm their hands while on duty. However, since it was never produced for the general public, very few remain, making it a rare find. It was manufactured in 1951.

In terms of condition, there are two small holes on the side, but these are kiln marks from the manufacturing process. There are few small scratches or stains from use, so it can be said to be in good condition for a Watchman's Mug.

There are many ways to enjoy it, and because it is simple, it can be used in a variety of ways, such as as a coffee cup, soup cup, ice cream cup, zenzai, or vegetable stick holder.
