Founded in 1917, Sterling was a manufacturer of tableware for hotels and restaurants. They started out with small items like mugs and bowls, but gradually expanded their business and even supplied large quantities of tableware to the military during World War II.
This particular mug was manufactured for military use, a handleless mug used by the US Navy. It was nicknamed the "Navy Watch Mug" or "Watchman's Mug" because watchmen on board would warm their hands while on duty. However, since it was never produced for the general public, very few remain, making it a rare find. It was manufactured in 1950.
The color is almost pure white. There are some small scratches and stains on the sides, but they are not too bad. There is also a crack on the interior wall, but this is due to manufacturing and not due to use (there is no water leakage).
There are many ways to enjoy it, and because it is simple, it can be used in a variety of ways, such as as a coffee cup, soup cup, ice cream cup, zenzai cup, or vegetable stick holder.
