It's a rough and rugged iron trunk, covered in rust, with small holes, peeling paint, and some deformation. We've handled this trunk a few times, though in different sizes, and it's in the best condition of all the trunks we've ever had, with the label still on the back of the lid.
"NVBEHN.MEYER & Co. H・MIJ・JAVA SUMATRA." I had been thinking it was made in Japan because it had been in stock several times, but I never imagined it was made in Indonesia.
The mechanism of the fasteners is interesting; you slide the rods across to first secure the left and right sides, then the center. Although it's hard to see because it's covered in rust, it appears there was a pattern painted on it, and some of it remains on the sides.
We have removed some of the rust and then cleaned it, but depending on how you use it, it may be easier to use if you spray it with clear spray or lay a cloth underneath.
