The glaze contains a small amount of iron, giving the piece a very pale bluish appearance. The name "shadow blue" comes from the fact that the shadows of the intaglio engravings, where the glaze has accumulated, appear blue, and it is also known as pale blue porcelain.

This is something I learned recently; I had never heard of Kage-ao before I got my hands on this piece of pottery.

Items from the Northern and Southern Song dynasties are expensive, but this one was probably made later. I'm ashamed to say I don't have the knowledge to determine its age, but the price is reasonable, so I think you'll enjoy it. You could line it with paper and place sweets on top, or fill it with water and float flowers or tea candles in it.

The piece is very thin and there are chips, dents and stains, so please enjoy it while being careful.
