The Yi people, who live widely from southern China to northern Indochina, mainly in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, are a large ethnic minority group. We will be showcasing fabrics woven by the Yi people of Sichuan Province.
This piece, made from three pieces of fabric sewn together, was originally intended as a futon or blanket and dates back to the early 1900s. The pattern is a purple geometric design, and although the base is cotton, the thread used is silk, which gives it a smooth texture.
What is particularly noteworthy is the precision of the weaving, with the patterns at the seams of the cloth lining up almost perfectly. Because old looms (machines for weaving cloth) were narrow, large pieces of cloth were usually made by joining together long, thin pieces of cloth, but unless the pattern shape and size were the same on all three pieces, they would not align so neatly. This is a rare piece made by an unknown master.
Not only is the weaving excellent, but the condition is also excellent and we are confident in recommending it. It would be great for collections, but it would also be interesting to display it on the wall, drape it over a sofa, or use it as a shawl.
