It is said that Yamabiko dolls originated as folk crafts made by Daijo Tokizo of Takayama, Hida, that imitated the faces of monsters and mountains, but this doll is unusual in that it is not modeled after a monster, but rather the Inakui Shinba, a sacred horse enshrined at Ichinomiya Minami Shrine.

The materials used are paper and bamboo, but perhaps the head of the sacred horse is painted on wood? I'm not sure what the material is.

A label reading "Yamabiko Doll Yamabiko Cave" is attached to the bamboo tube in the center. The instruction sheet wrapped around the bow is crumpled and the bamboo tube is slightly tilted, but there is no sign of serious damage.
