This is a wooden weight called a koma, which was used when weaving rice bales and straw mats. While most koma are rod-shaped, this item is elaborately made, with the center carved out and copper wire tied around it. It is thought that it was originally used by threading a rope through a loop of copper wire.
There are some darkening and cracks in the wood and some rust (verdigris) on the copper wire, but this is the charm of a well-used tool. You can display it as is, hang it, or use it to massage acupressure points.
