This mug is from Victor's most basic line, which continued to be produced until the company closed down in the late 1980s. The stamp on the bottom indicates that it is a later model. The mug is a rare chocolate brown color with uneven paintwork. It is estimated to have been produced between the 1970s and 1980s.
The condition is very good, with only a few small scratches due to use. However, please note that there may be some grain marks from the manufacturing process and some areas that are not glazed.
All of the new mugs are large L size, giving you the weighty feel you expect from a heavy mug. However, because handle size varies from mug to mug, we will be selling them in two sizes: small (about 1-2 fingers) and large (about 2 fingers) for your convenience (the size may vary for those with small or large hands).
About Victor mugs
Founded in 1893, Victor originally grew as a manufacturer of insulators, insulating devices used in electrical wires. However, during World War II, the insulator business stagnated, and the company began exploring the possibility of manufacturing ceramics using the same raw materials as insulators.
In the early 1940s, the US Navy requested a coffee mug that could withstand the rocking and rolling of a ship, and Victor was ultimately awarded the contract.
Navy's request was for a mug that was thick and durable, without handles that could break if hit, and in response, Victor created the Watchman's Mug, a mug shaped like a Japanese teacup.
During World War II, they also began producing thicker, more durable bowls for military use, which continued to be produced for some time after the war. As for mugs, they also made improvements to the Watchman's Mug, retaining the thick construction but adding handles.
Even after the war, Victor continued to make simple, durable mugs with little change in design. This simplicity and durability gained them great popularity among restaurants and diners, and they became a widely loved standard for coffee mugs.
