This brass Taylor compass, likely from World War II, features a ruby in the center of the needle to withstand friction.
There is some dullness on the surface of the case and a small chip on the edge of the glass, but it is still in good, usable condition.
Due to its design, the magnetic needle will come off if you shake the device, but if this happens, turn the device upside down and hit it against your palm to remove the glass crystal.
