This mug has no handle and was used by the US Navy. It was made quite thick to ensure durability on a rocking ship. Furthermore, handles would break if they were hit, so they were not designed to have handles at all.
These types of mugs are known as "Navy Watch Mugs" or "Watchman's Mugs" because they were very useful for sailors to warm their hands while on watch on board, but because they were never produced for the general public, very few remain and they are rare.
By the way, Corning's milk glass mugs were the most commonly produced Navy watch mugs, so they are quite well-known, but porcelain mugs were also supplied by various manufacturers other than Tepco, including Shenango, Sterling, Victor, Jackson, and Walker.
This mug is a pure white, with a large diameter and generous capacity for a navy watch mug. While the condition is somewhat poor, there are some small scratches, stains, and some smudges and scrapes on the bottom that are difficult to remove. The small bump at the bottom and the two lines on the inside are kiln marks from the manufacturing process.
The stamp on the bottom was used between 1931 and 1968, but this item is thought to have been manufactured in the 1940s or 1950s.
It can be used as a coffee mug, as well as a soup or dessert cup, or to hold vegetable sticks; it can be used in a variety of ways depending on your imagination.
