It is believed that this vessel was used by royalty in the ancient Mayan civilization from the 5th to 10th centuries to drink chocolate made from processed cacao. It is said that they would carry two of these vessels and pour the contents from one to the other, frothing the drink as they drank.
These types of vessels are called chocolate cups, and are characterized by their nearly cylindrical shape and flat bottom. The Mayan civilization spans several modern countries, but chocolate cups are most often found in Guatemala.
The design is made up of diagonal wave patterns and lines, with the spaces between the lines painted red. Above that are horizontal lines with patterns drawn between them.
Unfortunately, I am not an expert, so I cannot be certain about the purpose or age of the item. Therefore, the price is simply determined from the purchase price (which is probably a bargain...). Please note that although there is no soil or dirt, there are signs of repairs and cracks.
