It's a wooden storage box with an accordion-style lid. It has a small Mitsukoshi plate on it, which makes me imagine it must have been a fairly high-end item at the time.
The inkwell is made of porcelain and comes with a brass lid. The underside of the lid is finished in Japan. The drawer has dividers for storing pens and other items, and there is space at the back for storing letters and other items.
It appears to be a fairly old item from before the war, but it is in good condition with only a few small scratches and cracks. The bellows lid slides smoothly, but when you retract it all the way, you may feel a slight sticking, so please do not pull it too hard.
