This is a tool used to reel silk thread from cocoons. It was originally made of wood, but metal ones began to be made in the early 1900s.
This item likely dates from the Taisho to early Showa eras. It has minimal rust, so it rotates smoothly and is still practical. It requires a spool to be attached to the central shaft, but the spool is not included.
The texture of the iron and wood is attractive, so just having it on display is enough to please the eye, but you could also use the wooden base as a display stand to display accessories and other items.
