We have received a large old Chemex (CM-4) for 2-13 cups that appears to be from the 1960s-1970s.

Although the basic design of the Chemex has remained unchanged, the detailed specifications vary depending on the era. Those made before the 1980s, known as Old Chemex, were manufactured by Pyrex, and from the 1970s to the 1990s they were also manufactured in Germany.

The manufacturing method is also different. Old Chemex was hand-blown by artisans, which is why the glass has subtle distortions and wrinkles. The glass is also thicker, making it heavier and more substantial than current mass-produced Chemex. The three protrusions (legs) on the bottom and the Pyrex stamp are also distinctive features of old Chemex.

This item has some scuffs on the sides and bottom, missing leather straps, and peeling paint on the wooden frame, all of which are signs of damage from years of use. However, there are no cracks, chips, or noticeable cloudiness, and it is in good condition (the wooden frame remains, so you can purchase the leather strap separately, or wrap it in cloth).

It can be used not only as a coffee maker, but also to make iced tea and fruit water. Drinks from packs or plastic bottles can also be poured into the Chemex and served on the table, making them look both good and delicious.

When making coffee, it is common to use a paper filter specifically designed for Chemex, but stainless steel filters such as KONE and KINTO, which can be used repeatedly without the need for paper, can also be used with this size Chemex.

About CHEMEX <br>The Chemex was invented in 1941 by German chemist Peter J. Schlumbohm. Since then, this Erlenmeyer flask-like coffee maker has remained unchanged throughout the world, and is on permanent display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Smithsonian Institution. Consumables such as paper filters, wooden frames, and leather straps are available at Chemex retailers such as Amazon, so you can enjoy your brew for years to come.
