Old catcher's mask

This catcher's mask appears to be quite old. The top and bottom straps are broken, and the strings that secure them are also about to break. We tried gently wiping the padding, but the leather surface had deteriorated and was peeling easily, making it difficult to clean. It is in a very fragile and ephemeral condition, but it also has its own charm.

Baseball is said to have been introduced to Japan in the early Meiji period, but this mask seems to date back to the early Showa period, or even a little earlier. Place it wherever you like, hang it up, and enjoy. Please handle it gently and with care, and please note that the leather will shed easily as it deteriorates.
