In 1858, John Landis Mason, a foundry worker, invented a system for sealing a glass jar by threading the top of the jar with a lid, and patented it as a Mason jar. At the time, the only ways to preserve food were by drying, pickling, or smoking, so the Mason jar quickly became popular.
After the patent expired in 1879, various manufacturers began making Mason jars, but until the 1910s, many jars were exact copies of John Landis Mason's products. These jars all have the same "MASON'S PATENT NOV 30TH 1858" on the side, but this jar also has the Hero Fruit Jar Co. logo above the "MASON'S" mark.
This jar was manufactured from 1884 to 1900. The glass is a cool light blue, and the surface has small irregularities, large and small bubbles, and wrinkles. In terms of condition, there is cloudiness and scratches within the glass, and small scratches on the outside. There is a light cloudiness that spreads throughout the jar, and small scratches on the outside.
The lid has been polished to some extent, but there is still some white rust and a small hole, so if you want to use it to store coffee beans, seasonings, etc., we recommend replacing it with a clean lid. The opening is a regular mouth size.
