Korean salted fish jars are made from red mud. There are tiny holes on the surface of the unglazed pot, which apparently aid in fermentation. Since the 1980s, when fermented foods began to be sold commercially, fewer people made them at home, and these types of jars have fallen out of use.
This item shows no signs of having been used as a salted fish jar, and there are traces of what appear to be cosmetic clay on the inside. There are currently no leaks, but please note that there is a chip in the opening. The last photo is of a salted fish jar featured in Kogeisha's "Beautiful Folk Crafts of the World."
