It's a large KODAK film canister, about 20cm in diameter. The label reads "PLUS X AERIAL SAFETY FILM," so it likely contained special film for aerial photography.
The inside is cushioned with a compressed paper-like material, and contains two round cardboard-like cushions. There are stains on the cushioning material, and the can itself has scratches, rust, and some dents, but after cleaning the inside and outside, it has been polished with oil.
The lid has a handle and is designed not to open easily, but if you pull the handle too hard it may come off, so we recommend opening it by pushing up the edge of the lid little by little with your fingernails.
