Kerr Glass Manufacturing Corporation, founded in 1903 as a company dealing in storage jars, is now a subsidiary of a larger company and is a somewhat obscure sister brand of Ball. However, the company's contributions to the mason jar industry, including the development of innovative lids, are significant.
The Self Sealing series was produced for a very long time, but this type, with its large "Self Sealing" inscription, is one of the earliest examples and is extremely rare. This particular bottle is also available in the rarer, larger 64oz size. The bottom of the bottle is inscribed with "KERR GLASS MFG CO SAND SPRINGS OKLA" and "PAT AUG 1915," placing it between 1914 and the 1920s.
This Self Sealing series was started a few years after Kerr started its own manufacturing (*), and is characterized by a large number of wrinkles and ripples in the glass. This is probably because the manufacturing technology was still low, but in terms of the texture of the glass, it is actually a major attraction.
*Until around 1909, Kerr did not manufacture its own products, and manufacturing was contracted out to Illinois Pacific and Hazel-Atlas.
The condition is very good, with some small scratches and slight cloudiness, but no noticeable stains. There is also a small chip on the top, but since it is not usually visible, it is not a big deal.
The lid is made by Ball and has some rust and darkening, but the milk glass interior is not cracked.
There are many ways to enjoy it. It can be used to store small items or as a vase, and it would also be interesting to display dried flowers or nuts in it. The glass is in good condition, so if you replace the lid with a clean one, it is also recommended for storing rice, cereal, short pasta, pet food, etc. The opening is the same size as the current Regular Mouth.
