Kerr Glass Manufacturing Corporation, founded in 1903 as a company dealing in storage jars, is now a subsidiary of a larger company and is a somewhat obscure sister brand of Ball. However, the company's contributions to the mason jar industry, including the development of innovative lids, are significant.
The Self Sealing series was produced for a very long time, but this type, with its large "Self Sealing" inscription, is one of the earliest and extremely rare examples. The bottom of the bottle also bears the inscription "KERR GLASS MFG CO SAND SPRINGS OKLA" and "PAT AUG 1915," placing it between 1914 and the 1920s.
This Self Sealing series was first produced a few years after Kerr began in-house production (*), and is characterized by the presence of numerous wrinkles and ripples in the glass. This is probably due to the fact that the manufacturing technology was still low, but in terms of the texture of the glass, this is actually a major attraction.
I tried to polish the glass thoroughly with a special cleaner, but as you can see, it's still quite cloudy. There are some bubbles and some light chips around the top, but they're not too bad. The lid is a Ball zinc cap, and although there is some white rust and stains, the milk glass inside is not cracked.
If you can't remove the cloudiness with a mason jar cleaner, I personally just replace the lid with a clean one and use it to store coffee beans, but if it bothers you, I also recommend using it as a storage container for small items or as a vase. The cloudiness becomes less noticeable when you put something inside, and the cloudiness fades considerably when you fill it with water.
The cloudy bottles also have an appealing, aged look, so you might as well display them as they are. The Kerr logo design and glass texture from this vintage are a delight to look at.
