Wooden carved Nipopo doll

Nipopo dolls are made by inmates at Abashiri Prison, who hand-carve each piece of Sophora japonica tree, which grows naturally in Hokkaido. They are said to be modeled after a god who grants wishes, with his eyes quietly closed and his mouth slightly open. The carving is quite simple, but looking at them brings a sense of calm to the soul.

It is relatively small, measuring about 15cm in height. There are a few small scratches, but no noticeable damage.
