Nipopo dolls are hand-carved by inmates at Abashiri Prison from locust trees that grow naturally in Hokkaido. They are said to be modeled after a god who grants wishes, with his eyes quietly closed and his mouth slightly open. The carving is fairly simple, but looking at them brings a sense of calm to the soul. They are large in size and quite heavy. There are some superficial scratches, but no noticeable damage.
