Rusty iron box

It's a brightly colored iron box with numbers on it. It's from America. I wonder what it was used for. It's a little thick and looks sturdy. There's a plate protruding from the front for locking.

The original color was green, but it was quite worn due to rust and paint. The inner sole was also badly rusted, so the whole was coated with clear spray paint.

The last photo shows a record being inserted. If you tilt it and insert it, the lid will close just fine. An A4 size record will fit with a little room to spare.
