This andonzara (lantern tray) is thought to date from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. It was placed inside a lantern and used to catch oil dripping from the oil tray.
It's a blown ink pattern, created by spraying ink onto a stencil in a mist, but the actual pattern is difficult to make out. Perhaps it's a bird. There are chips, repairs, dents, and black spots, but it's a nice piece.
