Indigo dyeing is said to be one of the oldest dyes, and the oldest existing example is said to be the linen cloth that was used to wrap an Egyptian mummy around 2000 BC. Indigo dyeing techniques were introduced to Japan around the 6th century. One indigo shade, kachiiro, was considered auspicious, and samurai wore indigo-dyed underwear in the hope of indigo's insect repellent properties. However, from the Edo period onwards, with the spread of cotton work clothes, indigo dyeing quickly became popular among the common people.
Indigo production continued to grow even after the Meiji era began, and it became so widespread that Westerners who saw Japanese kimonos and ukiyo-e prints began to call it "Japan Blue" or "Hiroshige Blue." However, high-quality Indian indigo and artificial indigo, a chemical dye, began to be imported, and due to their low cost, they spread rapidly, and the traditional indigo dyeing gradually disappeared.
This fabric, which has stencil-dyed fabric on the front, was used as a quilt cover. It dates back to the Meiji to Taisho period. The stencil-dyed fabric is made of four long, thin pieces of fabric joined together, and the lining has slits.
There are some loose threads, fraying of the fabric, discoloration, fading, and signs of repairs, but no severe damage is observed.
The size is just right for a two-seater sofa cover. The fabric is in good condition, so we hope you will enjoy using it and enjoying the stencil dyeing and indigo colors.
