The Dong people, who live widely in southern China, including Guizhou Province, are an ethnic minority that dresses in costumes made with dyed and woven textiles. What we would like to introduce to you is a baby carrier covered in vibrant patterns.

The first thing I want you to notice about this fabric is the regular geometric pattern. It was probably sewn by hand, stitch by stitch, but the pattern is so intricate that it makes you dizzy just thinking about how long it must have taken. Looking at the back, you can see that the ends of the threads are sticking out, and the texture of this thread suggests that it is probably silk.

The obi has been reinforced with sashiko stitching, and it is clear that no detail has been overlooked in the craftsmanship. The Dong people are known for their politeness and respect for the elderly and children, and this piece truly embodies their humanity.

It is made up of two pieces of cloth, one large and one small, joined together, and although it may be difficult to tell which way it is, the smaller piece is on top to protect the head, and the larger piece wraps around the baby's body. Miao baby carriers also have a similar design, and since the Miao and Dong people live in the same region and have cultural and social exchanges, they seem to have many similarities like this.

It's hard to think of any uses for it other than as a baby carrier, but you could display it on the wall, tie the strings and hang it anywhere you like, or even use it as a short apron.
