In Southeast Asia, there is a custom of betel quid, where betel leaves are coated with lime dissolved in water and chewed together with cut areca nuts, resulting in a kind of euphoric sensation. The containers used to store this ingredient developed as art pieces and were introduced to Japan during the Muromachi period, where they were highly prized by tea masters.
This is a silver container for storing lime. It was made in Thailand in the early 1900s. The exterior is a dull silver, but the interior retains its bright color and still has some lime remaining.
It's a small and unassuming item, but it can be used to decorate small spaces or as a clip holder.
