Current mason jars from Ball and Kerr use lids that fasten a thin metal disc with a ring, but in the past, metal lids called "zinc caps" with milk glass fitted inside were also produced and used in large quantities.
The former is made of a material that is prone to rust, so it is often discarded, but zinc caps are made of zinc and are therefore less susceptible to rust, so most vintage mason jars come with zinc caps.
The zinc caps introduced on this page are made by Atlas, but the size is for the very rare wide mouth (wide mouth caps can also be attached to bottles other than those made by Atlas).
The only Atlas wide-mouth mason jars with zinc caps are the Atlas Special Mason jars, which were probably manufactured from the early 1900s to the 1920s, so it is likely that this zinc cap was also made around this time.
The condition is used, and due to its age, there was a lot of white rust and blackening, but the unevenness of the rusted parts was smoothed out and the blackening was polished off as much as possible. There are no cracks in the inner milk glass, and we have excluded any chipped metal parts.
The condition is such that it can be used without any problems for anything other than food, so if you want to use the wide-mouth vintage jar to store small items or display dried flowers, this is the product for you.
