Wooden box with unusual fasteners

It's a unique wooden box, with an iron bar holding the front of the lid in place. "AMER" is inscribed on both sides. I've heard it's from Europe, but I wonder what it was used for. Judging from the rust and the rounded corners, I imagine it must be quite old, dating from before the 1950s.

There are stains, scratches, chips, rust, etc., but I think it's at a level that can be enjoyed as part of the charm. Perfect for storing stationery, small items, letters, etc.
