This is a 1948 roll sign that was once used on buses running in Manhattan. Buses today have electronic displays, just like in Japan, but in the past, the sign functioned by a roll of paper with the destination printed on it that would spin around. The destinations listed were as follows:

14th Street
HOUSTON ST
MARKET & SOUTH STS.
WILLIAM ST. & PARK ROW
SPECIAL
NO PASSENGERS

The letters are centered, with short place names displayed on one line and long ones on two lines. The size and spacing of the letters vary, but the typesetting is what makes the roll sign the most interesting feature. It's not too monotonous, there's just enough space, and it's a very impressive typesetting, but what's interesting is that it wasn't designed as a poster or anything like that, but was made for the purpose of displaying bus destinations.

In recent years, cheap replica roll signs have been sold that even reproduce the damage, but this is a one-of-a-kind vintage sign that was actually used. There is some discoloration, especially in the letters below "SPECIAL" and on the white part of the back, as well as some wrinkles and slight dirt, but it does not look dirty and can be enjoyed as a unique texture that is characteristic of a vintage sign that has actually been used.

It goes surprisingly well with rooms with an American feel, as well as simple, unadorned rooms. Please note that it is in its original condition and does not come with a hanging string.
